Title Alternative Pottery inscribed in ink with the character sen (専) and its interpretation
JaLCDOI 10.18926/63029
FullText URL jdc_001_082.pdf
Author Minami, Kentaro|
Abstract In this paper, I considered the significance of pottery inscribed in ink with the character sen (専). There are very few examples of such pottery and sen is not believed to have been a commonly used character in ancient society. Sen can be written with a single character or with two or more characters, and in the latter case, the word sentō (専當) is found. The word sentō has the meaning of taking responsibility for a specific task and is also used as the name of a position in the imperial court and at shrines and temples. Especially in the ancient period, it is thought to have been related to duties concerning taxation, duties surrounding the land of temples and shrines, and the duties of manor administrators. The meaning of sentō can be confirmed from examples of its use in historical documents. Based on an analysis of the sites where pottery bearing ink inscriptions of sentō and sen has been unearthed, I suggested that even when the single character sen was used, it had the meaning of sentō.

Title Alternative Analysis of the Tottori-kamitakatsuka mounded tomb through airborne LiDAR survey
JaLCDOI 10.18926/63028
FullText URL jdc_001_067.pdf
Author Mitsumoto, Jun| Yamaguchi, Yuji| Ryan, Joseph|
Abstract This paper presents the results of a drone-based airborne LiDAR survey of the Tottori-kamitakatsuka mounded tomb located in Akaiwa city, Okayama prefecture. Dating to the second half of the Late Kofun period (latter 6th century), this mounded tomb has traditionally been considered either the largest keyhole-shaped mounded tomb in the Bizen area of this period (total length of either 67 m or 75 m) or a round tomb with a diameter of approximately 30 m. Details of the tomb’s size and shape have long been uncertain, owing to the lack of detailed survey mapping of the mound and its environs. In this paper, the authors present their findings on the shape and size of the mounded tomb based on high-quality three-dimensional data acquired through airborne LiDAR survey utilizing a drone; they suggest that the tomb is a keyhole-shaped mounded tomb measuring approximately 75 m in length. This mounded tomb is therefore the second largest mounded tomb of the Kibi region during the period, following the Kōmorizuka mounded tomb located in Sōja city. Additionally, the authors discuss the significance such three-dimensional data has for enhancing our understanding of Japanese history on both a local and archipelago-wide scale.

Title Alternative The impact of income and consumption on subjective well-being: Cross sectional analysis by Japan’s prefectures and age groups
JaLCDOI 10.18926/63027
FullText URL jdc_001_040.pdf
Author Tsuri, Masao|
Abstract In this paper, the author analyzes the impact of economic indicators such as consumption expenditure and income on subjective well-being, using the Survey on Satisfaction and Quality of Life released by the Cabinet Office. Known as the Easterlin Paradox, even if a country's economic indicators, such as GDP per capita, increase, it does not mean that the average level of happiness of the people increases along with it. However, such theories as the relative income hypothesis indicate that income influences life satisfaction at the individual level. In this paper, the author analyzes subjective well-being and economic indicators at the individual level. Results indicate that the magnitude of the correlations among these variables differs by age. In the younger working-age group, increase in consumption, as well as in income, has positive effects on overall life satisfaction more significantly than in the retired group. This is because consumption of the younger group is lower than the desired level due to budget constraints. For those in their 50s, job satisfaction tends to be more significant. For the retired generation, subjective satisfaction with everyday matters such as housing, health, and social activity is more significant than economic conditions.

Title Alternative Kofun culture and the ancient Maya: An introductory comparative archaeology of “Out of Eurasia"
JaLCDOI 10.18926/63025
FullText URL jdc_001_021.pdf
Author Aoyama, Kazuo| Matsugi, Takehiko|
Abstract Both the ancient Maya and Kofun society of Japan were cultural regions formed by Homo sapiens groups after leaving the Eurasian continent more than 10,000 years ago. In this paper, we examine their similarities and differences by comparing perspectives on time and space. The two societies were stratified and witnessed the development of monuments that emphasized their verticality. The greatest similarity was the formation of a network society in which local polities coexisted without the institutionalization of centralized leadership at the beginning. Subsequently, the Kofun society adopted the worldview of the Eurasian continent including the concept of the "nation", thereby achieving a new social integration. On the other hand, the ancient Maya, a primary civilization, did not go through the same social process and maintained a sustainable society over a long period of time, maintaining the same form of worldview, monuments, and technological systems. On the similarities rooted in the universality of the human body and cognition, disparity in the process of environmental and social changes, including the direction and distance of "Out of Eurasia", can be seen in the subsequent differences between the ancient Maya and the Japanese archipelago. In this paper, we have illustrated how the similarities and differences created diverse directions of culture and history.
