Abstract Okayama University has seen recently an upsurge in the number of courses taught in English. While students generally like the English-medium courses for the abundance and novelty of information available in them, they tend to show hesitance to participate, which sometimes leads to dissatisfaction with the courses. International faculty members also feel something is amiss because they do not understand why students fail to be responsive. Clearly, enhancement of student participation and mitigation of the alienating teaching experience of international faculty are challenges to effective administration of global studies. To that end, the quiet cultivation of optimal demographics for Englishmedium courses is currently the most effective strategy.

Abstract This paper explores the experiences of Japanese-schooled Zainichi Koreans. It analyses the differences and commonalities in terms of their education, family structure, and ethnicity. It also examines how some Japanese-schooled Koreans (re)gained their ethnic identity through their activities in the Chongryun youth group, as well as why they were attracted to the group and how their activities affected their lives and identities. The author conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with thirty-seven Zainichi Koreans, including eighteen Japanese-schooled Zainichi Koreans, from 2007 and 2010. This research shows differences in schools and education are the major source of divisions in the Zainichi population and the subsequent formations of their identities.

Abstract For many years, there have been numerous attempts by the Japanese Government (MEXT in particular) to help Japanese Universities to keep pace with their counterparts in international developed nations. In 2020, only 3 of them remain in the top 100 of the ARWU list, and the ranking of Japanese universities continues to be significantly on decline. Based on the well-known Humboldt model, putting research at the core of the system, an innovative development strategy has been implemented at Okayama University. The paper details the major features of the method and finally concludes on the possible extension of the model to numerous Japanese universities where research teams are significantly present.

Abstract This paper discusses the diversifying lives of Zainichi Koreans in order to understand their identities in transition. Along with the improved legal and social status of Zainichi Koreans and subsequently their living conditions, a large number of Zainichi Koreans have been leaving ethnic institutions, and in some cases, the Zainichi community. The ethnic relations surrounding Zainichi Koreans also partly reflect the diplomatic relations between Japan and the two Koreas. The difference in the images of the two Koreas is a significant factor in their ethnic identities. This paper also examines how Zainichi Korean civil rights movements after the 1970s have encouraged many Zainichi Koreans to assert and maintain their ethnic pride.

Abstract Based on a statistical analysis of R&D activities in the field of superconductivity (SC) in a broad sense, the paper reports that Japan's leadership is strong over the past 20 years, in terms of researchers publications and patents. It also essentially shows that among the main world players, the Japanese normalized contribution is significantly dominating, although some trend towards a diminished leadership is observed in the data over the period 2005 -present time. Finally, the paper highlights that by taking advantage of their internationally recognized expertise in the field, joint Japanese and European research teams may advance superconductivity as a reliable road to meet Energy and Health SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals -UNESCO 2015).

Abstract This study attempts to develop a management model at cross-cultural work environment, which explains how managers’ perception affects their organisational performance. The model is created based on findings of quantitative research conducted toward Japanese aid project managers working in developing countries. As a result of cluster analysis, four types of aid project managers were identified. The model clarified how four types of aid project managers perceive, behave and consequently lead to either high or low performance organisation. Finally, this study indicates that fostering and maintaining positive perception are a key for successful organisation.
