Abstract In many standard undergraduate textbooks of macroeconomics, open economies are discussed by means of the Mundell−Fleming model, an open macroeconomic version of the IS−LM model. This short paper develops a simple differential−equation version of the dynamic Mundell−Fleming model, taking account of two key assumptions : (i) the Marshall−Lerner condition is globally violated and (ii) the investment function depends nonlinearly on the current output level. Under our settings, we demonstrate that the exchange rate and the other relevant variables can display persistent fluctuations due to the occurrence of a stable limit cycle. We also discuss a paradox that the resulting dynamics may well be consistent with the J−curve effect.

Abstract This paper considers a dynamic commons game in relation with mitigation of invasive alien species such as nutria in Okayama. In our commons game, players (trappers) non−cooperatively seek to maximize their own payoff by extracting the renewable resource stock (nutria). One key assumption is that the cost of extraction of the resource is negatively related to the current stock level. For a low level of resource stock, the extraction cost is high, which makes the extraction less lucrative for the players and which in turn stimulates the renewable resource stock to regenerate more rapidly. As the resource stock reaches a high level, the reverse process will start, and this can cause oscillating behaviors. Our simple model proposed here exemplifies that an increase in the number of players can drastically change the qualitative as well as quantitative features of the dynamics for the renewable resource stock.

Abstract The study attempts to analyze the ins and outs of the risk reporting guidelines in UK. The guidelines advocate for the voluntary adoption of risk reporting through annual reports of the company. This voluntary reporting of risk will ensure the transparency and efficiency of the company management that eventually help the company to obtain funds from the capital market with the possible lowest cost. They also advise to disclose material / relevant risk information in a proper way so that the users can take their economic decision based on those disclosed information. On the other hand, company need not to disclose the commercially sensitive risk information, as it can give advantage to the rival companies. This risk reporting guidelines are also having some weaknesses. Such as, they mention about inverse relationship between level of disclosed risk information and cost of capital without any empirical evidence. Guidelines give a vague direction about the commercial sensitive risk information because companies can hide some important risk information on the ground of commercial sensitivity if needed. Other lacking include unavailability of suitable / reliable risk identification and measurement tools, expectation about common knowledge and so on.

Abstract The author tried to measure RaB, RaC and ThB in the hot spring waters using G-M counter and proved the existence of RaB and ThB in Misasa Hot Springs. To 100 liters of spring water ahout 20 gms of ferric chloride and then sodium hydroxide were added. Precipitate was dissolved in hydrochloric acid and after adding bismuth and lead, the solution was saturated with hydrogen sulfide. The precipitate of sulfides was filtered and ignited to ashes after drying. The β-activity of the ashes was measured by a mica-window type G-M counter with the recording circuits of scale of 16. Natural background was 50±5 connts per minutes. Six spring waters of Misasa, namely "Spring of Branch Laboratory", "Nakayu", "Gunze" "O-T-R", "Jwayu", and "Tsukiminoyu" were investigated. RaB was detected in all samples. ThB was found only in "Gunze" and "O-T-R". ThB content of "Gunze" was estimated, to be roughly 1×10(-12) Curie units per liter.

Abstract Various colormetric methods for determining magnesium in natural waters have been studied, and the methods using 8-oxyquinolin, ammonium molybdate and titan yellow were studied most frequently(1)), following the studies on the interfering ions(2)). Brilliant yellow(3)), l-amino-2-naphthol-6-sulfonic acid(4)) and other new reagents were also used. E. D. T. A. was used, but the determination by using this reagent is not exact. Present reagent already reported by T. Ashizawa(5)), magneson II, is insoluble in water, soluble in alkali and hardly soluble in ethanol. In the existence of magnesium ion, the color of solution varies from pink-violet (in alkali) and orange (in ethanol) to blue-violet. This variation of color was evaluated photometrically by Shimadzu photoelectric spectrophotometer, and moreover the grades of interference by interfering ions were clarified.

Abstract Differential thermal investigation was made of amorphous hydrous ferric oxides, precipitated on neutralization of ferric chloride solution under different laboratory conditions, ranging from DOC to 85°C in temperature, and from 3 to 12 in pH. Each of the differential thermal curves obtained shows an endothermic peak due to the release of adsorbed water, followed by a exothermic peak due to crystallization of anhydrous ferric oxide to hematite. The temperature corresponding to the exothermic peak varies in the range from 240°C to 460°C accrding to the temperatures and pH values of the solution from which the hydrous ferric oxide is precipitated.

Abstract In recent years, coulometric analysis has been developed and widely used as a technique for the determination of substances in solution by measuring the quantity of electricity required for the completion of a reaction in an electrolysis cell. Of two coulometric techniques, i. e., coulometric titration with a constant current and coulometric analysis with a controlled potential of a working electrode, the latter is more interesting to the author, because by this method both electrolytic separation and quantitative determination of chemical species can be achieved simultaneously. Especially, the use of a mercury cathode as the working electrode(1)) has an advantage that the optimum control potentials can easily be determinable from polarographic data. In our laboratory, we took up the coulometry of uranium as one of the interesting themes of researches when we had an opPortunity in studying various kinds of analytical methods for uranium in accordance with the request by Japan Atomic Fuel Corporation. The coulometric determination of uranium (VI) by using a mercury cathode at a controlled potential was studied by G. L. Booman, W. B. Holbrook and ]. E. Rein(2)). It was found to be very useful for the analysis of uranium in a highly enriched nuclear element which underwent fission to an appreciable extent. But the instrument used by them(3)) was complicated and expensive. Therefore, a simple counter millicoulometer has been coustructed in our laboratory, a readymade potentiostat (electrical instrument for automatic controlled potential electrolysis) being tried for electrolysis. By these instruments, the author studied the fundam ental conditions of coulometry for uranium and tried the successive determinations of uranium and thallium in mixed solutions.

Abstract This paper aims to establish guidelines for public pension reform in an aging Japan, using a numerical simulation approach. The paper examines the effects of demographic change and public pension policies on economic growth and welfare, using a dynamic life-cycle general equilibrium model. It deals with the benchmark case with the current Japanese pension schedule based on the 2004 reform, and the reform cases in which the whole basic pension benefit is financed by a consumption tax and in which the earnings-related pension is abolished. Moreover, it handles the case in which a progressive expenditure (or consumption) tax is introduced. The simulation results show that the level of economic welfare is higher under these reforms than under the current pension schedule.
