Abstract A 67-year-old Japanese man underwent enterotomy because of enterolith ileus. Component analysis by infrared spectroscopy revealed that the enterolith was composed of a high concentration of deoxycholic acid. We further analyzed and compared the ultrastructure of the enterolith and a commercially available powdered form of deoxycholic acid by means of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed that the ratios of carbon and oxygen in the enterolith were equal to those in the deoxycholic acid powder. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed rectangular prism-shaped particles on the surface of the enterolith. This structure was similar to that of the deoxycholic acid powder. The surgically removed enterolith had a twisted and coiled appearance. Possible mechanisms underlying the formation of this unique form are discussed.

Abstract The present study addresses the question how Go for it!, a textbook developed on task-based language instruction mode, treats language forms. Tasks and activities from a sample unit in Go for it! are analyzed to examine whether and how textbook writers incorporate a Focus on Form in the task and activity design. The results show that equal emphasis is laid on both meaning and form, and three major types of Focus on Form tasks and two types of Focus on Form activities are identified. The study may contribute to textbook designers and teachers in treating the issue of how to design Focus on Form activities in task-based language teaching.

Abstract We conducted a study on molecular epidemiology and clinical implications of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from urine. Over a 10-year period from 2001 through 2010, a total of 92 MBL-producing P. aeruginosa urine isolates were collected from patients (one isolate per patient) who were admitted to 5 hospitals in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. When cross-infection was suspected in the hospital, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was performed. In the resulting dendrogram of 79 MBL-producing P. aeruginosa urine isolates, no identical isolates and 7 pairs of isolates with ≥80% similarity were found. The biofilm-forming capabilities of 92 MBL-producing P. aeruginosa urine isolates were significantly greater than those of 92 non-MBL-producing urine isolates in a medium of modified artificial urine. The imipenem resistance transferred in 16 of 18 isolates tested, and these frequencies were in the range of 10-3 to 10-9. All of 18 isolates tested belonged to internationally spread sequence type 235 and had 3 gene cassettes of antimicrobial resistance genes in the class 1 integron. The strong biofilm-forming capabilities of MBL-producing P. aeruginosa urine isolates could be seriously implicated in nosocomial infections. To prevent spread of the organism and transferable genes, effective strategies to inhibit biofilm formation in medical settings are needed.

Abstract This article describes the methods and rationale of the Okayama University LEC English Program evaluation. The methods include summative measures (TOEIC and TOEIC SW) to see if the program is helping students improve their English proficiency. Formative measures are also being utilized to understand various aspects of students’ communicative competence and language learning to consider ways to improve the program. These measures include surveys on learner affect( motivation and anxiety), a reading strategy survey, and vocabulary tests. The results of the pretest measures will be reported and possible implications will be discussed.

Abstract This exploratory study will begin with a review of cinematic portrayals of teachers and their situations by establishing three categories: thought-provoking stories of teachers and students trying to overcome social barriers, entertainment first productions with an uplifting resolution of conflict, and documentaries that track the real-life struggles and successes of educational practitioners and their students through projectbased training and performance. Then I will use forms of reflective practice and discourse analysis to delve deeper into the details of teaching and context. This working paper will conclude with some thoughts on what ‘good’ teachers do.

Abstract The debris avalanche occurred in Kitamura area, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture caused by the hard rain of Typhoon 12 of September, 2011. Furthermore, 11 small landslides occurred in the study area. In this area, the altitude of mountainous are not so high (150m to 250m) and the amount of precipitation which producted the debris avalanche was not very serious quantity with 230mm. However the debris avalanche occurred. One private house collapsed, and the first floor part of the Kitamura Elementary School was buried due to the debris flow. The purpose of this study is to examine causes of the debris avalanche disaster occurred in Kitamura area using applied geological technique. The length of the debris avalanche scar is about 250m, and alluvial fan is formed as a debris slope. The ground is composed of weathered granite and the bottom of the valley was filled by soils derived from disintegrated granite. There are three small landslides as head scarps with steep slopes at approximately 30°-35°. The debris avalanche was inferred to have started as a shallow soil slip at the head by rainfall. 3 major causes are inferred which originated the debris avalanche in the study area; steep slope, ground composed of weathered granite, existence of sandy soil which occupied at the bottom of valley.
