Abstract There are many limitations and difficulties in terms of expanding agricultural lands. Also, some other factors affect the agricultural lands that result in decreases such as climate change, erosion and misuse of the lands. It is clear that these developments in agricultural land use threaten the future of human welfare, social conditions, economic growth and food supply. In this study, we examined the land use and its significance that represent past agriculture and regional characteristics in the Chugoku region including Okayama prefecture and the Seto Inland Sea. Specifically, among the products called as industrial crops, such as cotton, pyrethrum, rush, tobacco, rapeseed, mulberry and tea, were adopted as the indicators. Currently, these landscapes can hardly be seen, only leaves of tobacco and tea can still be seen in mountainous areas. Even in agricultural land usewhich has almost disappeared now, it may have indirect influence as in the case of reclaimed land and rush products. Therefore, we reaffirmed in this study the reasons for their existence and their significance.

Abstract The contribution of cereals to economies is undoubtedly very important and has many dimensions in terms of use of cultivated areas, agricultural production, nutrition, domestic and foreign trade and national income. In this study, we examined the characteristics of agricultural production in Okayama prefecture from the viewpoint of grain, beans and potatoes excluding rice, wheat and barley in the long term. These are undoubtedly supposed to have a certain role in complementing the function as the staple food of rice and wheat, etc. Also, according to our literature investigations, researchers have not focused on this context for Okayama Prefecture by not spending enough attention in the past. Therefore, we focus on these subjects in this paper by examining a historical significance. It is observed that some planting area and yield of crops have drastically reduced in Okayama prefecture.

Abstract The current ratio of dependence on food in Japan has remarkably grown and the significance of food self-sufficiency by concurrent agriculture may decline, while importantly conserving the natural environment, appropriate management of farmland. Okayama prefecture has an agricultural trend over more than 100 years of rice, barley and wheat cropping area with the rise and fall of its agricultural land use from the prior to the Industrial Revolution in Japan. Although rice reduction policy in Japan is scheduled to end in 2017, Japan is strongly subject to rice compared to other grains. In order to understand the role and scope of the agricultural sector in Okayama pref., it is necessary to review the changes in the related agricultural products for the long term. In Okayama pref., the cultivation and processing of some industrial crops including sericulture sector were thriving in the past, but, commercial agriculture was not well developed and the meaning of the production of cereals was greater than current production. Considering the part of agricultural characteristics by examining the cultivation of crops over the long term, planting area survey by variety confirmed that the greatest feature of rice cultivation in Okayama pref. is the diversity of varieties. In addition to various rice varieties, agriculture in Okayama pref. has a high sustainability, resistance and flexibility against changes on climate, policies and land use.

Abstract Readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (RESOLVE) is a multi-shot echo-planar imaging (EPI) modality with k-space segmented in the readout direction. We investigated whether RESOLVE decreases the distortion and artifact in the phase direction and increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in phantoms image taken with 3-tesla (3T) MRI versus conventional EPI. We used a physiological saline phantom and subtraction mapping and observed that RESOLVE’s SNR was higher than EPI’s. Using RESOLVE, the combination of a special-purpose coil and a large-loop coil had a higher SNR compared to using only a head/neck coil. RESOLVE’s image distortioas less than EPI’s. We used a 120 mM polyethylene glycol phantom to examine the phase direction artifact.vThe range where the artifact appeared in the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) image was shorter with RESOLVE compared to EPI. We used RESOLVE to take images of a Jurkat cell bio-phantom: the cell-region ADC was 856×10−6mm2/sec and the surrounding physiological saline-region ADC was 2,951×10−6mm2/sec. The combination of RESOLVE and the 3T clinical MRI device reduced image distortion and improved SNR and the identification of accurate ADC values due to the phase direction artifact reduction. This combination is useful for obtaining accurate ADC values of bio-phantoms.

Abstract Lavender essential oil (Lvn) has anti-inflammatory effects in an ovalbumin-sensitized murine model of asthma, and inhibits inflammatory cell infiltration into the lungs. The anti-inflammatory effects of Lvn on cell adhesion molecules are not clear. Here we evaluated the effects of Lvn and its main constituents, linalyl acetate (LA) and linalool (LO), on the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-induced cell adhesion molecules in murine brain endothelial bEnd.3 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The bEnd.3 cells were treated with Lvn, LA, or LO and subsequently stimulated with TNF-α. The mRNA expression levels of cell adhesion molecules were detected using RT-PCR. E-selectin and P-selectin protein and phosphorylated-NF-κB p65 were detected by western blotting. The effects of Lvn on HUVECs were measured by RT-PCR. In bEnd.3 cells, Lvn and LA suppressed TNF-α-induced E-selectin, P-selectin, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and phosphorylated-NF-κB p65 in the nucleus; LO did not suppress P-selectin or phosphorylated-NF-κB p65. Lvn inhibited TNF-α-induced E-selectin mRNA in HUVECs. These results indicate that Lvn and LA inhibit TNF-α-induced cell adhesion molecules in endothelial cells through the suppression of NF-κB activation. Consequently, Lvn or other essential oils including LA may be useful as alternative anti-inflammatory medicines.

Abstract We investigated the genetic mechanisms underlying the association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types and the immune response to hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination in 84 healthy Japanese adults, and found that the HLA-DRB1*04 and HLA-DQB1*03 frequencies were higher in the low responders (<10 mIU/ml; n=9, 10.7%) compared to the responders (≥10 mIU/ml, n=75, 89.3%). The combination of DRB1*04 and DQB1*03 was associated with a low response to vaccination. The DRB1*04 and DQB1*03 haplotypes’ frequencies were significantly higher in the low responders compared to responders. Novel candidate HLA types may be important in Japanese individuals.
