Author Hyodo, Yoshimi| Tanaka, Koji| Tanaka, Tomoko|
Abstract Research on the relation between relaxation and promotion factors of stresses from home caregiving revealed that the number of years as a member of caregivers group had positive effect against such stresses. In this study, we prepared questionnaires focused on psychological function of caregiver's self-help group. Survey sheets were mailed to 385 caregivers joinning in such groups, and 176 valid answers were collected from February to March, 2000. The average age of caregivers was 64.5 years old, and most of them are spouses and daughters-in-law in 3 to 4 people families. The average period as a member of a group is 4.2 years. They satisfied with the activities, and are willing to be continuing members. One third of them always or often come to the meetings, and they ask public service when they attend. Demand for knowledge and technique on caregiving is high, and the group fulfill most of the demand. The members are also willing to tell information to others.

Title Alternative Communication strategies research : the state of the art and the future direction
FullText URL 114_0081_0090.pdf
Author Takatsuka, Shigenobu|
Abstract In this paper an attempt is made to describe the state of the art in communication strategies (CS) research and to identify some issues to be resolved through future research mainly by reviewing the papers collected in Kasper and Kellerman (eds.) (1997). Those issues include CS for solving non-lexical problems, developmental features of CS, roles of CS use in second language acquisition, classification of CS, CS use in various types of interaction, research methodology, factors in CS choice, and content/method of teaching CS.

Title Alternative Isothiocyanates as Novel Cancer Chemopreventive Agents and Their Underlying Molecular Mechanisms
FullText URL 095_0087_0091.PDF
Author Nakamura, Yoshimasa|
Abstract A promising group of compounds that have a chemopreventive property are isothiocyanates (ITCs). ITCs have been shown to induce apoptosi in various cancer cell lines and experimental rodents. Multiple signaltransduction pathways as well as apoptosis intermediates have been also posturalted. We recently clarified the moleculae mechanism underlying the relationship between cell cycle arrest ad apoptosis induced by benzyl isothiocyanate(BITC), a major ITC compound isolated from papaya. The exposure of cells to BITC resulted in the inhibition of the G2/M progression that coincided with not only hte up-regulated expression of the G2/M cell cycle arrest-regulating genes but also the apoptosis induction. Conversely, treatment with an excessive concentration of BITC resulted in an abortive apoptotic pathway without DNA ladder formation. This commentary will review the biological impact of cell death induction by BITC as well as other ITCs and the involved signal transduction pathways.
