Abstract we look closely at George Eliot's essays and book reviews, it dawns upon us that biblical criticism was one of the few central concerns she held consistently over her years of essay and review writing. Already in 1851 she exhibited a formidable knowledge of the critical study of the Bible as we see its best fruit in the reviews entitled "R.W.Marckay's The Progress of Christendom." These are powerful enough testimonies to make us realize that her historical study of the Bible was a mirror in which her path of self-discovery had been reflected. Naturally enough we can see in them Marian's (earlier George Eliot's) mature thoughts on religion and science. And these, as some of the major critics of the age agree, represent the voice of the nineteenth century.

Title Alternative A Study on Kimiko AMAN's "ONITA no Boshi"

Abstract Protocols of a chromosome observation method described by Iwanami and Moriwaki were introduced. By contrast, the proposed an improves method of chromosome observation and explained how to make karyotype by microphotographs of chromosomes. Examples of chromosome spread and karyotype were here presenred and it was indicated that karyotype analysis is still a useful tool to understand genome transmission.

Title Alternative Instructional Competence of Teachers in Lessons: With Focus on the View of Children and View of Learning Support Materials
FullText URL 133_0035_0046.pdf
Author Ono, Hiroo|
Abstract Recently the concept of "instruction" faces much confusion. New view of student archievement, which advocates self-initiated learning and independent decision-making, strongly emphasizes spontaneity or responding to individuals. This inevitably implies the need of passive approach such as "to watch for", "to understand and accept" and "support" by teachers. On the other hand, introduction of the period for integrated studies and reduction of class hours of academic subjects triggered fears of decline of student achievement among parents as well as teachers. For those who see the bottom-line of school education as acquisition of the basis and the fundamentals, instruction means nothing but training to master the basics and to acquire the fundamentals. However, it doesn't imply that instruction should go between "watch for" and "training". Rather teaching should establish the interactive, responstive relationships between a teacher and students and the learning materials should be envisaged and prepared as something that help develop capacity of understanding and expression of children. In this sense, the learning materials provide a crucial framework when integration of instruction and learning is the issue.

Title Alternative Words in Vogue Seen in 18th Century Literary Works: With Special Reference to Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield
FullText URL 133_0001_0011.pdf
Author Wakimoto, Kyoko|
Abstract The Vicar of Wakefield, Goldsmith's only novel published in 1776, embodies a wide variety of lexical features which reflect the 18th century British hierarchical society. The present paper aims at exploring words in vogue in those days especially among 'people of fashion.' Words of historical significant in this novel, as well as in several other contemporary literary works, are examined from a philological point of view, each of their etymological origins being traced mainly with the aid of the Oxford English Dictionary. Through the discussion in this paper, we hope to illuminate some linguistic trends, along with some fashionable taste, in 18th century London.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure the group efficacy in classroom, and teachers' work group. After reviewing of research on group efficacy in educational settings, A new version of the Group Efficacy Inventory was developed. In the Study1, A new version of the Group Efficacy in Classroom and School Moral Test was conducted by 233 elementary school students in the 5 and 6 grades. Factor analysis of scales of the Group Efficacy in classroom for elementary school resulted in 3 factors (Active commitment to life of classroom, Autonomy, Out-school activity). In the Study2, A new version of the Group Efficacy Classroom and School Moral Test was conducted by 303 secondary shool students. Factors analysis of scales of the Group Efficacy in Classroom for secondary school resulted in 2 factors (Activity of classroom, School celemony). In the Study3, A new version of the Group Efficacy in teachers' work group and organizational commitment test was conducted by 202 school teacheers. Factor analysis of scales of Group Efficacy in teachers' work group resulted in 3 factors (Organizational behavior in the school, educational goal, Pupils' guidance). Teachers who gave high weight to scales of the Group Efficacy in tearchers' work group had more positive evaluation of organizational commitment.

Abstract Some people may resort to foul language like swearing and cursing to vent uncontrollably intense feelings. These profane and stigmatized expressions, which occur in a large variety of forms, have evolved for centuries and are now deep-rooted in English-sy>eaking countries. It is true that most of them have lost their original or literal senses and are used merely as meaningless expletives, but there are some which are still deemed strictly as taboo--social restrictions prohibit their use in public. This article deals with oaths, imprecations and other blasphemous formulas found in Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer (1773) and Sheridan's The Rivals (1775). Examples are sorted according to their fundamental meanings, with some statistical analyses added in a later section for further discussion. We are concerned here particularly with the linguistic features influenced by such social factors as "gender" and "class," tracing the trends in 18th century British society. We hope to elucidate what conventional formulas were widely adopted in those days and how new modes were devised by each author.

Abstract Recently, the factory automation controlled by computer has greater impact on manufacturing development. The factory model pursuing both efficiency and flexibility of manufacturing is proposed in this paper. Automated Guided Vehicle has an important role for technological improvement of factory model. It can transport many parts to each station consisting of NC machines. In order to learn the operating management of the proposed factory automation, a new teaching material is needed for school education. Consequently, a prototype of factory model with AGV routing layout is constructed in this paper. In this model, AGV controlled by some sensors is assembled with LEGO Mindstorms. Finally, an example is given to show the practical use of the proposed factory model for the manufacturing education.
