Title Alternative The State of the Applicants to Our Midwife Training
FullText URL 004_011_017.pdf
Author Shirai, Kiyoko| Goda, Noriko|
Abstract Nursing students taking the entrance examination for our midwifery training program in the academic year 1992-1993 were evaluated with regard to what motivated them to apply to our program and their plans after graduation. The results were as follows : 1. The wish of the nursing students themselves was the decisive factor in their decision to apply. 2. Our investigation revealed that 10% of the nursing students decided to take up midwifery after graduation from nursing school; 25% decided to do so before their entrance to nursing school : and 65% made up their minds while they were still at nursing school. 3. The applicants planned to work as professional midwives for a long time after their completion of the midwifery training program. 4. Junior college graduates, after receiving authorization from the National Institution of Academic Degrees, were motivated to apply to our midwifery training program for the explicit purpose of acquiring a bachelor's degree.

Title Alternative Delivery Assistance Techniques
FullText URL 004_001_009.pdf
Author Goda, Noriko| Okazaki, Yuka| Shirai, Kiyoko|
Abstract The delivery assistance laboratory is one of the most important part of the professional curriculum in the training program for midwives. The educational significance of 10 cases of delivery assistance was reviewed. The technical standards of the students improved with accumulation of experience in the assistance of deliveries. Evaluation of the methods in which the students were assessed with regard to technical improvement in delivery assistance was performed. Of the total number of 136 students of midwifery registered at our school in the past 7years, 50 who were able to assist successively in 3-10 cases of normal childbirth were evaluated in this study with regard to their acquisition of skills needed to assist in deliveries. Fourteen technical items related to the assistance of delivery in its second and third stages were assessed. An evaluation standard consisting of 3 grades, namely "able to perform", "somehow able to perform", and "not able to perform" regarding the above mentioned 14 technical items were used to assess the mastery of delivery assistance techniques by the students. Our results showed that as the students accumulated experience in delivery assistance, self-assessment ratings of "able to perform" increased on the average. The accumulation of skill concerning the management of the neonate immediately after birth, the instruction of patients regarding the application of abdominal pressure, and the assistance during crowning was specially evident. In contrast, although self-assessment ratings of "able to perform" with regard to "assistance of the mother immediately after giving birth" and "assistance immediately after the delivery of the fetal head" did increase, its rate of increase was small.

Title Alternative Ferrous Iron-induced Lipid Peroxidation in Cell Culture: preliminary experiments
FullText URL 003_049_053.pdf
Author Yamamoto, Goki|
Abstract To study the effect of Fe(2+) on the cell culture, preliminary experiments related to the lipid peroxidations of 3T3 cells and calf serum were carried out. Amonuts of lipid peroxides, as thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-reactive substances, were measured by means of the TBA color reaction under the acidic conditions by acetic acid, and were expressed as TBA value. The TBA value of calf serum in the phosphate buffered saline (PBS) with ethyrendiaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was lower than that of the control. The value in the presence of Fe(2+) showed significantly high level, but it was almost prevented by the addition of EDTA. Besides, Fe(2+)-induced lipid peroxides of serum in the PBS during the incubation at 37℃ were capable to measure by the application of EDTA. The TBA values of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitates isolated from serum in the PBS and the culture medium were lower than that of control serum, but no difference was observed between the both TCA precipitates. The results suggested that the impurities in the culture medium were removed by TCA precipitation. Effects of Fe(2+) and EDTA on the TBA value of TCA precipitates were observed similarly to the case of control serum. Fe(2+)-induced lipid peroxidation of the cells in the PBS, which the peroxidation was stopped by the addition of EDTA, was observed, and it was accompanied with the lag time of induction period. The TBA value of the cells was more prevented by EDTA. The method in this paper may not be capable for the quantitative measurements of lipid peroxides in cells or serum, but is applicapable to measure the changes of relative amounts of lipid peroxides.

Title Alternative Mathematics and Mathematics Education
FullText URL 002_111_119.pdf
Author Takahashi, Yasuji|
Abstract With the 17-th century an essentially new period in the development of mathematics began. The circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms of mathematics studied now was no longer exhausted by numbers, quantities and geometric figures. On this basis there resulted the explicit introduction into mathematics of the ideas of motions and change. Being inseparably connected with the needs of natural science, the accumulation of quantitaive relations and spacial forms studied in mathematics was continuously expanding. However, in addition to this quantitative grouth, at the end of the 18-th and the beginning of the 19-th centuries a number of essentially new features were observed in the development of mathematics. The enormous amount of factual material which had been accumulated in the 17-th and 18-th centuries led to the demand for a deep logical analysis and unification of it from a new point of view. In essence, the relationship between mathematics and natural science was no loss close but was now increased in complexity. The majority of new theories arose from internal requirements of mathematics itself. However, the circle of applications to problems of science and technology was greately expanding at this time. In this way, as a result of both the internal requirements of mathematics and the new needs of science and technology, the circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms studied in mathematics was greately expanded: relations between elements of arbitrary groups, operations in function spaces, etc. are now parts of mathematics. In this paper, we are concerned with mathematical thought. Several ideas of great scientists are introduced, and we know the essence of mathematical thought. The power of mathematical thought can be brought up by means of a deep thought. The relationship between mathematical thought and creativity is also studied.

Abstract We clarified that adequate oxygen stress induced by low dose radiation activates not only chemical biological protective function, such as induction of the synthesis of SOD, GPX and HSP70, but also the biomembrane function, such as enhanced membrane fluidity and ATPase activity. It is possible that activation of these mechanisms alleviates in vivo oxidation injuries resulting in alleviation of pathologic condition, such as symptoms of hepatopathy and diabetes mellitus. Namely, adequate activation of the functions of the living body by low dose radiation can contribute to suppressing aging and to preventing or reducing active oxygen species related diseases which are thought to involve peroxidation and have been regarded as the diseases for which radon spring water is an effective treatment. Clarification in detail of the mechanisms of these phenomena is required to understand the effects of low dose radiation on the functions of the living body, including adaptive response.

Title Alternative Process of Acid Sulfate Soil Formation from the Viewpoint of Moisture Conditions on Coastal Muddy Soil and a trial of it's Amelioration
FullText URL 001_135_141.pdf
Author Adachi, Tadashi|
Abstract According to recent soil survey data, it has been reported that acid sulfate soils cover areas of about 11,670,000 hectares all over the world and about 40% of those are in South-East Asia. Most of crops could not be grown on those areas without any amelioration due to low soil pH. This report consists of two parts. One is on acid sulfate soil formation in laboratory experiment. Another is on a trial of acid sulfate soil amelioration in field experiment. The results obtained on acid sulfate soil formation, in order to make clear the relationships between the process of oxidation of sulfur compounds and the moisture conditions (moisture suction) in coastal muddy soils, in laboratory experiment are summarized as follows; The concentration of sulfuric ions increase as oxidation of sulfur compounds contained in pyrite, etc. occurs, and as a consequence, the soil pH decreases in the coastal muddy soil (Fig.1). Especially, the soil pH decreased remarkably in the range of pF 2.3~3.4. The activity of soil microorganism takes part in this reaction by helping out with bringing about sulfur oxidation and formation of sulfuric ions. The pH decrease in the soil with autoclaved treatment was only slight at pF values lower than pF 3.0. Accordingly, it is concluded that the decrease of pH in coastal muddy soil occurred mainly due to soil microorganisms which oxidize sulfur compounds under the condition of higher-water than pF 3.0. The results of field experiment is summarized as follows; As a general rule, it is able to remedy the surface acidification of peat/acid sulfate soils by mixing lime dust with plough layer. However, the effect of mixed lime dust is easily disappeared in the area where the acidic ground water table is always high and moves up over the surface in rainy season. Therefore, it was carried out that several experiments for seeking protection against surface acidification due to capillary upward movement of acidic ground water by means of inserting a buffering layer of lime gravel (thickness of lime gravel layer =5㎝) between the top soil and the acidic subsoil (20 ㎝ depth) in the fields, Munoh series which is young acid sulfate soil, at the Narathiwat Land Development Center in South Thailand. The results of soil pH measurement carried out in the field in November of 1985, August of 1987 and September of 1990, it coincides with 2,4 and 7 years respectively after the beginning of the experiments, are shown in Table 3. In the plot of P2 and U1, application of lime dust to the plough layer can increase soil pH rapidly but it's residual effect is not so long. Within a 5 year period, the soil pH is likely to return to below 4. On the other hand, an underlaid lime gravel layer tends to improve the soil around the lime gravel only slight but steadily with time. Therefore, it is concluded that surface soil acidification caused by the upward movement of acidified ground water would be protected against, rapidly and continuously, by both mixing lime dust with plough layer and underlying lime gravel below plough layer. If acid sulfate soil areas would be used as upland fields, much of organic matters in soil are easily decomposed by drying. Therefore, it is suggested that it would be better for these areas to be used as paddy fields, also from the above results.

Abstract Partial least squares linear discriminant function (PLSD) as well as ordinary linear discriminant function (LDF) are used in pattern recognition analysis of writer identification based on are patterns extracted from the writings written with Hangul letters by 20 Koreans. Also a simulation study is performed using the Monte Carlo method to compare the performances of PLSD and LDF. PLSD showed remarkably better performance than LDF in the Monte Calro study and slightly better performance in the analysis of the real pattern recognition data.

Title Alternative Evaluation of Liquefaction Resistance by In-situ Testing and Its Application to Reliability Design
FullText URL 005_145_151.pdf

Abstract A calculation method of probability of liquefaction is proposed in this paper. The spatial variability of soil parameters for the dynamic shear strength, i.e., N-values, median grain size, fines contents, and the statistical characteristics of the earthquake frequency are considered in the analysis. The standard penetration test (SPT) is convenient to estimate the spatial variability of the dynamic shear strength and mainly used in this study. Furthermore the determination of dynamic shear strength based on Swedish weight Sounding test also introduced here, because it is the simpler test than SPT. While the statistical model of the earthquake frequency is determined based on the record of historical earthquakes. Using this method the probability of liquefaction is calculated. The sand compaction pile method is considered for the ground improvement against the liquefaction. Finally, the relationship between the sand replacement rate and the probability of liquefaction is clarified.

Abstract In functional principal component analysis (PCA), we treat the data that consist of functions not of vectors (Ramsay and Silverman, 1997). It is an attractive methodology, because we often meet the cases where we wish to apply PCA to such data. But, to make this method widely useful, it is desirable to study advantages and disadvantages in actual applications. As alternatives to functional PCA, we may consider multivariate PCA applied to 1) original observation data, 2) sampled functional data with appropriate intervals, and 3) coefficients of basis function expansion. Theoretical and numerical comparison is made among ordinary functional PCA, penalized functional PCA and the above three multivariate PCA.
