Abstract | TO THE READER by Bacon's secretary William Rawley when he published New Atlantis after Bacon's death is quoted here as a substitute for the synopsis of this paper : This Fable my Lord devised, to the end that he might exhibit therein, a model or description of a College, instituted for the interpreting of Nature, and the producing of great and marvellous works for the benefit of man ; under the name of Salomon's House, or the College of the Six Days' Works. And even so far his Lordship hath proceded, as to finish that part. Certainly, the model is more vast, and high, than can possibly be imitated in all things ; Notwithstanding most things therein are within men's power to effect・・・・ |

Abstract | With the 17-th century an essentially new period in the development of mathematics began. The circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms of mathematics studied now was no longer exhausted by numbers, quantities and geometric figures. On this basis there resulted the explicit introduction into mathematics of the ideas of motions and change. Being inseparably connected with the needs of natural science, the accumulation of quantitaive relations and spacial forms studied in mathematics was continuously expanding. However, in addition to this quantitative grouth, at the end of the 18-th and the beginning of the 19-th centuries a number of essentially new features were observed in the development of mathematics. The enormous amount of factual material which had been accumulated in the 17-th and 18-th centuries led to the demand for a deep logical analysis and unification of it from a new point of view. In essence, the relationship between mathematics and natural science was no loss close but was now increased in complexity. The majority of new theories arose from internal requirements of mathematics itself. However, the circle of applications to problems of science and technology was greately expanding at this time. In this way, as a result of both the internal requirements of mathematics and the new needs of science and technology, the circle of quantitative relations and spatial forms studied in mathematics was greately expanded: relations between elements of arbitrary groups, operations in function spaces, etc. are now parts of mathematics. In this paper, we are concerned with mathematical thought. Several ideas of great scientists are introduced, and we know the essence of mathematical thought. The power of mathematical thought can be brought up by means of a deep thought. The relationship between mathematical thought and creativity is also studied. |

Title Alternative | The Thermal Condition in the Classrooms and Students' Thermal Sensation (Report 1) - A Study done from April through July - |
FullText URL | 002_045_049.pdf |
Author | Ohta, Takeo| Kondo, Masuko
Abstract | Dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature in classrooms at the School were measured from April through July in 1990, by means of an Assmann ventilated psychrometer. The thermal sensation of the female students was surveyed by a questinnaire at the same time. Correlation coefficients between the rates of thermal sensation and thermal indicators such as natural temperature, relative humidity, effective temperature and discomfort index were computed. And multiple regressions equations of these indications and partial corelation coefficients were also computed from the temperature and humidity. These data showed that the students' thermal sensation in this season is primarily influenced by temperature and not so much by humidity. The relation between temperature and the rate of students who feel the heat was discussed. |

Abstract | Evaluation of dental implantation is very important because it gives useful information for both planning the dental treatment and evaluating of prognosis. This study aimed at improving our previously developed Tooth Mobility (TM) tester and developing a dental implant movement (IM) checker. The measuring probe included a bimorph transducer of two piezoelectric elements. It was actuated by single frequency and detected tooth acceleration. The acceleration signal was processed and the IM score was calculated in PC. Two artificial implant models in which IMZ implant was buried with different elasticity of surrounding (molteno(@)) were used to examine the performance of the IM checker. The IM scores obtained in the models were 29 and 58. The measurement time was below 15 seconds. The average of measurement variation of one operator was below 6% and the average variation among five operators was below also 6%. The IM checker reduced a measurement variation by 51% and a measuring time by 61% compared with those of the TM tester in natural teeth. The newly developed IM checker had sufficient measuring reliability and we could objectively estimate the implant movement in dental clinics. |

Abstract | Natural CO(2) springs have been scarcely utilized in Japan, whereas artificial CO(2) bathing has become popular by the introduction of CO(2) tablets and other apparatus for CO(2) water supply. Artificial CO(2) bathing is indicated for degenerative connective tissue disorders such as scleroderma, common stiff and painful shoulders, chronic joint pain, lumbago, and trophic changes due to insufficient peripheral circulation by virtue of the increase of tissue pO(2) and the improvement of tissue perfusion. Artificial CO(2) bathing promotes recovery from fatigue and is beneficial in women whose health has been adversely affected by cold. |

Abstract | This paper is an attempt to establish an objective criterion for civilizations, in order to treat them impartially and give them a fair assessment. First, theories up to the present about civilizations including those of Spengler and Toynbee are introduced. Second, the criterion presented by Bagby to distinguish major civilizations and peripheral civilizations are examined and proved to be subjective. Then the author proposes as an objective criterion for big civilizations just the pattern of succeeding four stages with the span of 400~500 years each. Big civilizations meeting this requirement which total eight or nine are divided into two types according to the difference of their nature. Lastly is shown how four puzzles of world history that have hitherto caused a lot of disputes (feudalism, absolute power of royalty, capitalism and modernization) can be solved through the recognition of these big civilizations. |

Abstract | Zinc oxide films were prepared on silica glass substrates by the use of an r.f. activated reactive evaporation (ARE) method, and were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrical conductivity of the films and the doping effect of Al ions were also investigated. XRD measurements indicate that the films were c-axis oriented and that an r.f. plasma of Zn and O was necessary for the ZnO film deposition. Substrate temperature, oxygen gas pressure, evaporation rate, r.f. power and Al doping amount affect the c-axis orientation, the growth rate, the microstructure of the films and electrical conductivity. Optimum conditions with a fine texture of the surface and having good ctystallinity as well as good conductivity (≒10(-4)Ω・cm) were as follows : the substrate temperature; 200℃, the total evaporation rate; 1.0Å/s, the oxygen pressure; 2.0×10(-4) Torr, the r.f. power; 250W and the Al evaporation rare ratio; 2~6%. The films with 1.0×10(-3)Ω・cm were prepared at 50℃ for the substrate temperature. |

Abstract | Our visual actions take both the sensory and reversible views in the relationship of the mutual coordination between them. And the visual actions, as a whole, realize the sensory scene when having the marked tendency to sensory views, and the reversible scene to reversible views. The author of Sakuteiki classified natural scenery into the landscape types called yo. The landscape types were transformed into the places where humans and nature happened to meet harmoniously. It was the main theme of the author of Sakuteiki to discuss how we should compose rocks in the place. We can find, in Sakuteiki, two manners of looking at nature, such as 'changing the taste' corresponding to the sensory view, and 'in compliance with the requesting mood of 'to the reversible view. They were, in the paper, studied to analyze the naturalistic landscaping of Sakuteiki. |

Abstract | CAD system is useful to define and input any artificial 3-dimensional configuration into computer, but the input of arbitrary natural 3-dimensional configuration is still serious for computer users. This paper includes a method to input arbitrary 3-dimensional configuration into computer. The method is based on 3-dimensioanl Delaunay triangulation which is a geometrical subdivision of arbitrary 3-dimensional convex domain into tetrahedra, and the auther shows a method to find triangles which cover whole surface of 3-dimensional body using the result of Delaunay triangulation. |

Abstract | With the increase of underground construction in metropolitan areas in recent years, the problem of associated earth retaining works cutting off the natural flow of groundwater has increased in both scale and extent. The authors are proposing a new diaphragm wall method that does not inhibit the flow of groundwater. This paper describes the verification of the detour permeation achieved by the new diaphragm wall method and the experimental results related to the blockage of this groundwater flow. |

Abstract | In this paper, the tendency of the number of tourists was examined for some 30 years at several sightseeing-areas in Okayama prefecture. Recently, large-scale parks on well-known theme have been built in Japan, the management strategy of sightseeing-spots is becoming harder. However, it is important for us to understand the peculiarity of local sightseeing-areas and advertise the information on unsophisticated nature and culture linked with surrounding ecological system consistently. Sustainable management of sightseeing-areas is affected and sustained by the thought and life-style of peoples living in the adjacent areas. |

Title Alternative | The Nature of Tsuyama Region based on Changing Chief Industries |
FullText URL | 008_063_079.pdf |
Author | Ichiminami, Fumikazu
Abstract | In this paper, the nature of Tsuyama region was explained in terms of several changing features such as agricultural, industrial, commercial, and sight-seeing activities. Also, short history of mining sulfide ore at Yanahara Town was described and the population change of surrounding area was analyzed. Although the vitality of agriculture in general has gradually fallen mainly due to the decrease of number of farm household, of the rate of full-time farm household, of the area of farmland, and of the harvested area of rice, tobacco, and Japanese radish, the production of black syobean and the rate of vegetables, etc. have increased. After the highway of Chugoku line was opened to traffic, the number of industrial parks and establishments suddenly increased in and around Tsuyama City and they employed many workers. Within the industries of Tsuyama City, manufactures of genaral and electrical machineries, equipment and supplies developed, but the ones of textile mill products, apparel and other finished products made from fabrics and similar materials declined. In sight-seeing, tourists of Yunogou spa have increased in a satisfactory. Population of the municipalities except Tsuyama City have decreased since 1970 and a number of large-sized stores have come to be located in the suburbs of Tsuyama City. |

Abstract | Groundwater has been recognised as the most cost-effective option of safe water supply to rural communities in Ghana. The demand for potable water has led to the drilling of a large number of boreholes in many parts of the country. To establish the threshold of groundwater development from storage in a major river catchment (Pra River) in South-West Ghana, studies on recharge to the weathered aquifer and statistical evaluations of specific capacity and potential yield have been carried out. The SACSMA conceptual hydrological modelling system was used for the recharge estimate. With recharge rate of 50 mm/yr, the natural groundwater resources in the basin was estimated to support a maximum withdrawal of 12 l/s for a 10 hour per day pumping. The groundwater resources potential of 1.6 l/sk㎡ could be considered the threshold of groundwater exploitation in similar river basins in South-West Ghana. A study into the relation between permeability and recharge under different conditions and scenarios is required to define their limiting role in groundwater resources development. |

Title Alternative | Rows-of-houses Preservation in Maniwa City of Katsuyama Area, Okayama Prefecture |

Author | Luo, Yanjuan| Ichiminami, Fumikazu
Abstract | The aim of the study is to explain the present condition of the rows-of-houses preservation policy of Okayama Prefecture and to examine the samples in Maniwa city, Katsuyama area. Besides, the interview investigation was mainly conducted for residents in the rows-of-houses of preservation area in Katsuyama for giving the concluding remarks about the findings. The traditional private houses in Katsuyama preservation area were partially restored in the 1985-89 and 1993-97 fiscal years by the subsidy from the prefecture. Furthermore, Katsuyamacho at that time founded the subsidy system for maintaining rows-of-houses preservation area (about 25.3 ha) independently in 1993, restored 9 private houses, and made and updated the shop curtains; "Noren". In the point of the observable items, the ground warehouse of structures with gable tile-roofing is visible and it is also in use. Moreover, a latticed window structure, a white wall, and a sea cucumber wall constitute the charm of new rows-of-houses. A stone pavement follows on the riverside at the site facing the Asahi River. There are the remains of an arrival-and-departure place of a flat boat and a brewery, etc. According to our investigation in 2002, the residents were satisfied with "It is easy to live quietly", "the beauty of a natural landscape", "harmony of rows-of-houses and a shop curtain", and "a historical atmosphere", but the recognition of "the creation of active rows-of-houses" was unexpectedly low. Therefore, cooperation between residents and informational sharing are much more required. Consequently, since both the visitors and the residents are satisfied very much with each facilities, such as the whole rows-of-houses, a samurai residence, a brewery, and a restaurant etc., town planning is well organized and attained the priority targets. |

Abstract | The potential of a crop favorably respond to breeding/selection and bioengineering programs depends upon the nature and magnitude of genetic variability. For effective selection, information on nature and magnitude of variation in population, association of character with dry matter yield and among themselves and the extent of environmental influence on the expression of these characters are necessary. The estimates of genetic parameters help in understanding the role of various plant traits in establishing the growth behavior of cultivars under a given set of environmental conditions. Genetic analysis leads us to a clear understanding of different morphological, physiological and genetic characters and also the type and extent of their contribution to dry matter yield. Six Brassica cultivars were grown in a P-deficient sandy loam soil for 49 days after sowing. Significant variations were observed for all the characters in all the cultivars used in the experiment. All the characters showed high heritability coupled with high genetic advance. Heritability (h(2)) is an approximate measure of the expression of a character. The highest estimates of broad sense heritability (h(2)= 0.90) and relative expected genetic advance (85.72%) were noted for root dry matter (RDM), while the estimate of expected genetic advance at 10% selection intensity was quite high (ΔG = 85.30c㎡) for leaf area per plant. The estimates of coheritability were positive and relatively higher for rootshoot ratio (RSR) in combination with shoot dry matter (SDM) (coh(2) = 2.002) and phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) (coh(2) = 1.875), whereas coheritability estimates were negative between leaf area per plant and RSR (coh(2) = -0.2010) indicating lack of association between these traits. High heritability with high genetic advance was exhibited by all the studied plant traits of cultivars evidencing that the traits could be further improved through individual plant selection. The innate variations within the Brassica gene-pool impel to drive a concentrated effort to understand the basis of adaptability. Access to the relevant genetic traits and information will provide necessary tools to select the optimal combinations of alleles adapted to local and changing growing environments especially nutrient stress conditions such as phosphorus (P) starvation. |
