| Abstract | Based on a statistical analysis of R&D activities in the field of superconductivity (SC) in a broad sense, the paper reports that Japan's leadership is strong over the past 20 years, in terms of researchers publications and patents. It also essentially shows that among the main world players, the Japanese normalized contribution is significantly dominating, although some trend towards a diminished leadership is observed in the data over the period 2005 -present time. Finally, the paper highlights that by taking advantage of their internationally recognized expertise in the field, joint Japanese and European research teams may advance superconductivity as a reliable road to meet Energy and Health SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals -UNESCO 2015). |

| Abstract | The Japanese higher education has attempted various internationalization initiatives (e.g., the Top Global University Project), and adopted English-medium instruction (EMI) and English-taught programs (ETPs). Based on several criticisms toward the project and recent investigations of the international students' satisfaction, a lack of formal and structural support for international students has been identified. While a paternalistic approach of student support has been practiced and recognized, this approach relies on informal support of a handful hardworking staff/faculty members and student volunteers/tutors. Furthermore, there are several major issues in integration of EMI/ETPs and administrative infrastructure in internationalization initiatives. In order to make improvements in both activities, international students' adaptation to Japan and its higher education need to be fully considered. In this process of international students' adaptation to a new culture, lack of cultural awareness and intercultural communication, inadequate language skills, educational system differences, and life adjustment and psychological problems are identified as major concerns. |

| Abstract | In a Scholarship in Practice course, Design Thinking and PBL were used as the educational methodology to deliver the learning content in the class called Multilingual Marketing and Community Connection for undergraduate students. Students completed group work, community interactions, and projects all online. Design Thinking and PBL supported student motivation and engagements. This article provides an example of one class that utilized the integration of both Design Thinking and PBL to support innovative problem solving. |

| Abstract | This paper explores the experiences of Japanese-schooled Zainichi Koreans. It analyses the differences and commonalities in terms of their education, family structure, and ethnicity. It also examines how some Japanese-schooled Koreans (re)gained their ethnic identity through their activities in the Chongryun youth group, as well as why they were attracted to the group and how their activities affected their lives and identities. The author conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with thirty-seven Zainichi Koreans, including eighteen Japanese-schooled Zainichi Koreans, from 2007 and 2010. This research shows differences in schools and education are the major source of divisions in the Zainichi population and the subsequent formations of their identities. |

| Abstract | Okayama University is fast becoming a popular choice for International Baccalaureate (1B) students in Japan and abroad. Okayama University was the first Super Global National University (SGU) in Japan, to accept the 1B Diploma and exempt 1B students from taking the university entrance exams. Within a span of 9 years since 1B admissions started in 2012, 87 1B students have enrolled in 10 Faculties and 1 special program including 20 graduates. During their 1B education, 1B students go through an academically rigorous, well-rounded and international minded educational program. Continuous follow-up surveys of 1B students at Okayama University from enrollment to graduation has revealed that, besides academic excellence, 1B students are also well equipped with various other skills as reflected in the 1B learner profile, such as effective communication skills, critical thinking skills, a high level of English fluency and leadership skills. All these added skills prepare 1B students to adapt well to any new or unexpected situation. When the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic hit University life in Japan, all academic classes switched to online and club activities were postponed indefinitely. As University life adapted and re-adapted to the new norms of the pandemic, extracurricular activities that were mostly face-to-face, were hard hit. This article takes a look at 3 extra-curricular activities led by 1B students in the medical faculty, which went online to keep students motivated and connected during the ongoing pandemic. |
