Abstract | In this study, we examined the change of rice cultivation in consideration of the global warming. In Japan, rice which is suitable for subtropical zone is grown even in an environment of cool-temperate climate. Since the rice varieties that resist of cold weather have been developed, rice cultivation spread to north parts of the country gradually. Land productivity of rice has also improved markedly. As a result, northern Japan became the main producer of rice. Now, taking not only crop production but also the landscape formation and preservation of the natural environment into account, we should think about the rural society from different aspects.
