勝田蕉琴《ラーマの離別》について－インドで発見された失われた日本画－

二十世紀初頭、岡倉覚三とラビンドラナート・タゴールの出会いから日印美術交流が始まった。日本画家勝田蕉琴も1905-1907年にインドに滞在し、画家や文化人と交流しながら作品を制作したが、滞印中の作品の多くは現存していないため、今まで研究が進まなかった。しかし、失われたと思われていた作品の一つ《ラーマの離別》が近年インドで発見された。インドの叙事詩『ラーマーヤナ』の物語を描いたものである。当時、ベンガル派の画家たちに大きな影響を与えた日本画の技法を用い、インドの鑑賞者にもわかりやすい主題を描いた本作は、日本インド美術交流の文脈の中で重要な位置を占める。

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Japan-India art exchanges began with the encounter between Okakura Kakuzo and Rabindranath Tagore. Japanese painter Katsuta Shokin also stayed in India from 1905 to 1907 and produced artworks while interacting with painters and cultural figures there. One of his works, Rama's Parting, which was supposed to have been lost, was recently discovered in India. It depicts a scene from the Indian epic Ramayana. Using Japanese painting techniques that greatly influenced painters of the Bengali School at the time, and depicting a subject easily understood by Indian viewers, this work occupies an important place in the context of Japan-India art exchanges.
