A report is made of a 52-year-old male whose main complaint was a painless tumor at the right side of the palate resulting in speech disturbance. He was diagnosed as a case of what Stout called benign mesenchymoma. Some discussion is also made of the tumor pathology in terms of genetic factors, predirective sites, age range, sex differences and therapy.

The subject of this study is the electromyographic investigation of the velopharyngeal sphincter structures. Seventy-five patients underwent examination, both patients with symptoms of velopharyngeal insufficiency and patients who were thought to have latent pathological sphincter changes based on local findings. A control group of 10 healthy examinees was also investigated. On the basis of electromyographic findings we divided patients into 2 groups: 57 patients without neuromuscular disorders and 18 patients with neuromuscular disorders of the velopharyngeal sphincter. Twelve patients from the latter group had acute, and 6 had chronic lesions of the velopharyngeal sphincter. Particular cases of illness within these 2 groups were investigated further. This study shows the usefulness of electromyography for diagnosing the exact causes of velopharyngeal insufficiency and for choosing the best approach to treatment.

Dental reconstruction in the cleft space is difficult in some patients with cleft lip and palate because of oronasal fistulas. Most of these patients receive a particle cancellous bone marrow (PCBM) graft to close the alveolar cleft, and secondary bone grafting is also required. Treatment options for the alveolar cleft including fixed or removable prostheses require the preparation of healthy teeth and are associated with functional or social difficulties. Recently, the effectiveness of dental implant treatment for cleft lip and palate patients has been reported. However, there have been few reports on the use of this treatment in bilateral cleft lip and palate patients. We report the case of a patient who had bilateral cleft lip and palate and was missing both lateral incisors. She received dental implant treatment after a PCBM graft and ramus bone onlay grafting (RBOG). A 34-month postoperative course was uneventful.
