kn-title=Teaching paraphrase as a communication strategy: a critical review and a proposal en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=This paper investigates how paraphrase can be taught as a communication strategy (CS) to help learners to cope with problems they encounter in speech production. By critically reviewing the literature on practical and empirical approaches to teaching paraphrase, it reveals that the notion of paraphrase in those studies has been very limited. It then investigates what it means to paraphrase by analyzing paraphrastic expressions used in a Inonolingual dictionary and a pedagogical grammar book. This analysis results in a list of some patterns of paraphrase both at and beyond the lexical level which learners may profitably exploit to avoid or solve their communication problems. It finally makes a pedagogical proposal that paraphrase exercises should be integrated into English lessons on a regular basis, in which learners are encouraged to paraphrase every single sentence in the textbook they use by selecting the most appropriate pattern of paraphrase from among those identified while making most use of all the linguistic resources at their disposal. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=Okayama University END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=18 cd-vols= no-issue= article-no= start-page=1 end-page=10 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2007 dt-pub=200703 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title= kn-title=Factors Affecting Listening Comprehension Ability of Japanese Learners of English en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=This study aimed to examine factors that might affect listening comprehension ability of Japanese learners of English. The factors were vocabulary/grammar, reading comprehension, articulation speeds for Japanese and English words, English repeatability (Le., the ability to repeat verbal input in English), auditory short-term memory, reading rate, and reading efficiency. The present study investigated these factors for the first-year students at a Japanese senior high school and made an attempt to explore exactly how they affected listening comprehension ability of Japanese learners. The results showed that listening comprehension of learners with good short-term memory was significantly better than that of learners with poor short-term memory in cases where their vocabulary/grammar and reading test scores were within the same level. A significant correlation was also observed between the articulation speed for English words and English repeatability, and between English repeatability and listening comprehension ability. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=TakenoJunichiro en-aut-sei=Takeno en-aut-mei=Junichiro kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=2 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=Joint Graduate School, Hyogo University of Teacher Education affil-num=2 en-affil= kn-affil=Okayama University END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=10 cd-vols= no-issue= article-no= start-page=39 end-page=53 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2008 dt-pub=20080101 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title= kn-title=The Emergence of an Online Learning Community in the EFL Context en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an application of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) technologies on learning community emergence and students' identity construction in the EFL context. To this end, a web-based course management system called Moodle was used in a general English class at a college. Adopting a sociocultural approach, we had a qualitative examination of the data obtained from students' online discussions. Through the lens of Wenger's (1998) notion of Communities of Practice, we found that learners' online activities facilitated the formation of an online learning community, in which learners constructed their identities. Specifically, with the deepening of the online negotiation, the participants expanded their identities from "we" as students confined in an inconvenient town to "we" as members in the other overlapping communities of the broader context. Thus, they reached a new level of understanding and developed a new sense of self in the community.

The primary objective was to verify the speculations on how oral reading practice helps to develop reading comprehension skills: (a) it improves the efficiency of phonological coding; and (b) it enhances the efficiency of lexical access. The efficiencies of phonological coding and lexical access were measured as the articulating speed of written words and as Stroop interference (Stroop, 1935) respectively. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the efficiency of phonological coding and reading comprehension, which supported speculation (a), but that there was no significant relationship between the efficiency of lexical access and reading comprehension, which refuted speculation (b). Some pedagogical implications were also suggested. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=MiyasakoNobuyoshi en-aut-sei=Miyasako en-aut-mei=Nobuyoshi kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=2 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=Joint Graduate School, Hyogo University o/Teacher Education affil-num=2 en-affil= kn-affil=Okayama University END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=17 cd-vols= no-issue= article-no= start-page=21 end-page=30 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2006 dt-pub=200603 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title= kn-title=Influences of Attention and Noticing on Second Language Acquisition en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=This study aims to investigate how realizing problems during translation from Japanese to English and noticing fonns in written model sentences encoumge learners to internalize linguistic items. The participants were asked to work on the same guided composition in the following week to examine how they retained lexical items from the relevant input. The results are: 1) The output-input process leads advanced learners to retain more lexical items;. 2) The uptake is promoted when: i) the participants analyze a fonn in the relevant input syntactically, and/or ii) the participants perceive a fonn in the model as being in contrast with its cOWlterpart in their own output and realize Wlgrammatical or less appropriate status ofthe latter; and 3) The output-input process helps learners gain lexical knowledge on use. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=IwanakaTakahiro en-aut-sei=Iwanaka en-aut-mei=Takahiro kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=2 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=Graduate School, Hyogo University of Teacher Education affil-num=2 en-affil= kn-affil=Okayama University END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=11 cd-vols= no-issue= article-no= start-page=35 end-page=49 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2009 dt-pub=20090101 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title= kn-title=Investigating the Nature of EFL Pair Interactions in a Computer-Mediated Communication Task en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=

In this article. we examined the patterns of pair interactions that emerged in a computermediated text-reconstruction task where 16 Chinese tertiary EFL learners worked in eight self-selected pairs in the chat rooms. This study drew on Storch's (2002) work on the nature of ESL pair work. Quantitative and qualitative data presented in this study suggested that six pairs fell under one of Storch's four patterns of interaction. The interactions of two pairs were more dynamic and did not match any of the four patterns. We did not find the significant relationship between thc pair patterns and the performance of their individualized posttests developed from language-related episodes during interaction. However, we did find that learning is more likely to occur when learners collaborate and jointly work out a successful solution in case of an emerging problem than when they have disagreements and cannot finally resolve them.

The first aim is to explain the concepts of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) and oral reading fluency. CBM is considered reliable and valid with characteristics of both formative and summative assessments (Fuchs & Fuchs, 1999). Oral reading fluency is one of the most effective CBMs in reading instruction for L1 elementary and special-education students aenkins, Fuchs, van den Broek, Espin & Deno, 2003). The second aim is to report investigations, which were conducted on thirty-nine Japanese second-year senior high school students of English, concerning: (a) whether oral reading fluency could index the English reading cOlnprehension for Japanese learners of English; and (b) whether oral reading speed could take the place of oral reading fluency in indexing their English reading comprehension. In the experiments, reading comprehension, oral reading fluency and three types of oral reading speeds of the participants were measured, and the correlations between them were computed. The three types of oral reading speeds were speed-focused, content-focused and comprehension-adjusted. The main results were: (a) there was a significant correlation between their reading comprehension and oral reading fluency (r=.482, p<.01); (b) there were significant correlations between their reading comprehension and three types of oral reading speeds (rs=.375-.479, p<.05), with the conlprehension-adjusted one being the highest (r=.479, p<.01); and (c) there were significant correlations between their oral reading fluency and three types of oral reading speeds (rs=.690-.770, p<.01) Findings based on the results were: (a) oral reading fluency can be a rough indicator of learners' English reading comprehension; (b) oral reading speed, which is much more handily measured than oral reading fluency, can also be a rough indicator of their English reading cOlnprehension; and (c) comprehension-adjusted oral reading speed can be a better indicator of their reading comprehension than the other types of oral reading speed. Implications for reading pedagogy were: (a) we should introduce the nleasurement of speed-focused oral reading speed into our reading pedagogy so that we may understand learners' decoding skills and deal with their deficiencies; and (b) we should also introduce the measurement of comprehension-adjusted oral reading speed into our reading pedagogy so that we may understand learners' comprehension skills as well as decoding skills and deal with their deficiencies. kn-abstract=本論の目的は,集団規準準拠テスト的側面と形成的評価的側面を兼ね備えた評価法であるカリキュラムに基づく評価法(Curriculum-based measurement=CBM)(Fuchs & Fuchs, 1999)として,L1の初等教育及び特殊教育において読解力の指標とされている音読の流暢さ(oral reading fluency = 1分間に正しく音読する語数)(Jenkins, et al., 2003)及び音読速度(1分間に音読する総語数)が,日本人英語学習者の英語読解力を示す指標となり得るか調査することである。 en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=MiyasakoNobuyoshi en-aut-sei=Miyasako en-aut-mei=Nobuyoshi kn-aut-name=宮迫靖静 kn-aut-sei=宮迫 kn-aut-mei=靖静 aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name=高塚成信 kn-aut-sei=高塚 kn-aut-mei=成信 aut-affil-num=2 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=兵庫教育大学大学院連合学校教育学研究科 affil-num=2 en-affil= kn-affil=岡山大学 en-keyword=音読の流暢さ kn-keyword=音読の流暢さ en-keyword=音読速度 kn-keyword=音読速度 en-keyword=読解力 kn-keyword=読解力 END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=7 cd-vols= no-issue= article-no= start-page=41 end-page=50 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2006 dt-pub=200603 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title=音韻符号化効率及び作動記憶容量と読解力の関係 ―日本人高校生の場合― kn-title=What Relationships Do the Efficiency of Phonological Coding and Working Memory Capacity Have with Reading Comprehension for Japanese Learners of English? en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract=本論は,(a)音韻符号化効率と作動記憶容量,(b)この2要因と読解力の関係,に関して,高校1年生と3年生の違いを調査した。 kn-abstract=This article investigated into differences between first- and third-year senior high school students concerning: (a) the efficiencies of phonological coding and working memory capacities; and (b) the relationships of these two variables with reading comprehension. Also explored was whether the relationships were reflected in word-retaining strategies of the first-year students in the reading span tests for measuring working melnory capacities. The findings were: (a) students may improve their working memory capacities but may not improve the efficiencies of phonological coding during the first two years of senior high school; (b) the efficiency of phonological coding contributes to reading cOlnprehension more greatly for first-year students, but working metllory capacity contributes to reading comprehension for third-year students; and (c) the word-retaining strategies of first-year students reflect the relationships between the two variables and reading comprehension. It then attempts to investigate what it means to paraphrase by analyzing paraphrastic expressions used in a monolingual dictionary and a pedagogical grammar book. This analysis is hoped to yield a list of some techniques or patterns of paraphrase, both at and beyond the lexical level, which second language learners may profitably exploit to avoid and solve communication problems they encounter in speech production. The paper makes a pedagogical proposal that paraphrase exercises should be integrated into English lessons, on a regular basis, in which learners are encouraged to paraphrase every single sentence in their textbook by using some of the paraphrastic techniques identified. The plausibility of this proposal has partly been tested by an attempt to paraphrase sentences in some textbook materials. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=TAKATSUKAShigenobu en-aut-sei=TAKATSUKA en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name=髙塚成信 kn-aut-sei=髙塚 kn-aut-mei=成信 aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=岡山大学 en-keyword=paraphrase kn-keyword=paraphrase en-keyword=communication strategy kn-keyword=communication strategy en-keyword=strategy training kn-keyword=strategy training END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=109 cd-vols= no-issue=1 article-no= start-page=11 end-page=18 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=1998 dt-pub=1998 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title=Global solutions to lexical and grammatical problems in L2 sentence production kn-title=文生成における語彙的・文法的問題のglobal solutions en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=In this paper an attempt is made to identify and classify global solutions to lexical and grammatical problems encountered in sentence production in English as a second language, It starts with a review of the previous research into local, or lexical level, solutions to communication problems and proceeds to describe some global solutions, which exploit semantic and pragmatic meaning relations. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=TAKATSUKAShigenobu en-aut-sei=TAKATSUKA en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name=髙塚成信 kn-aut-sei=髙塚 kn-aut-mei=成信 aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=岡山大学 en-keyword=communication strategies kn-keyword=communication strategies en-keyword=paraphrase kn-keyword=paraphrase en-keyword=local solutions kn-keyword=local solutions en-keyword=global solutions kn-keyword=global solutions en-keyword=lexical kn-keyword=lexical END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=102 cd-vols= no-issue=1 article-no= start-page=165 end-page=184 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=1996 dt-pub=1996 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title=コミュニケーション方略の指導 ―パラフレイズのための後置修飾構造の指導を目指した授業― kn-title=Teaching Communication Strategies : A Lesson Aimed at Teaching Post-Modlfylng Structures for Paraphrase en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract= en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=岡山大学 END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=114 cd-vols= no-issue=1 article-no= start-page=81 end-page=90 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2000 dt-pub=2000 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title=Communication strategies research : the state of the art and the future direction kn-title=コミュニケーション方略研究の現状と課題 Kasper and Kellerman(eds.)(1997)が示唆するもの en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=In this paper an attempt is made to describe the state of the art in communication strategies (CS) research and to identify some issues to be resolved through future research mainly by reviewing the papers collected in Kasper and Kellerman (eds.) It starts with questioning and exploring the mindsets of those involved in English language teaching and leaning, i.e., Japanese learners of English, Japanese teachers of English, native speakers of English, and native speaker researchers. It then argues that those mindsets have been interfering with the facilitation of cross-cultural understanding on the part of Japanese learners of English through teaching English as a foreign language. It focuses on the process of changing the grammatical subject (i.e. paraphrase beyond the lexical level), as a means of avoiding and/or solving problems in speech production. The process is investigated by analyzing the relationships between the original sentences and their paraphrastic counterparts given in a monolingual dictionary. The investigation identifies various ways in which linguistic elements in the original sentence are manipulated to yield a new subject. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=TakatsukaShigenobu en-aut-sei=Takatsuka en-aut-mei=Shigenobu kn-aut-name=髙塚成信 kn-aut-sei=髙塚 kn-aut-mei=成信 aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= en-aut-name=KoshiroMitsue en-aut-sei=Koshiro en-aut-mei=Mitsue kn-aut-name=湖城光恵 kn-aut-sei=湖城 kn-aut-mei=光恵 aut-affil-num=2 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=岡山大学 affil-num=2 en-affil= kn-affil=吉備高原学園高等学校 en-keyword=communication strategies kn-keyword=communication strategies en-keyword=paraphrase beyond the lexical level kn-keyword=paraphrase beyond the lexical level en-keyword=changing the grammatical subject kn-keyword=changing the grammatical subject END
