Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the NAPL content (θNAPL) in unsaturated soil to detect and monitor the NAPL contaminations in soil and groundwater. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between θNAPL and permittivity (K) in unsaturated sandy soil as a fundamental study to estimate the θNAPL. An ADR (Amplitude Domain Reflectometry) method was used to measure the K in the soil including the NAPL which was a castor oil as light NAPL or a HFE-7100 as dense NAPL. The experimental study indicated the linear relation between θNAPL and K in unsaturated soil with soil-NAPL-air. Using this relationship, we can estimate the θNAPL. We applied the umu-test to raw sewage and treated effluent from two points of view, one is to evaluate a treatment process and the other is to identify the genotoxic substances. The original strain of umu-test, Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 can detect nonspecific genotoxicity, on the other hand, by using S. typhimurium NM2009 of the umu-test highly sensitive to aromatic amines, genotoxicity related to aromatic amines is measured. The result showed that genotoxic substances which have the polycyclic aromatic amino structures in the sewage remained after biological treatment. Tow-step HPLC fractionation followed by MS analysis to identify the genotoxic substances was applied to samples to detect mutagenic and carcinogenic heterocyclic amines. The concentration of Trp-P-1 and Trp-P-2 determined in the effluent caluculated from HPLC-UV analysis were on the order of 10(-5) mg/L. However, the radical theraputics against the pollenosis has not been established yet. Some deactivating methods, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, wet heat treatment and adsorption method to the extracted solution of ceder pollen were examined. Deactivating effect against the pollenosis antigen was determined by measuring the changes of the specific antibody values (IgE antibody) in patient blood serum as the marker in vitro. B(2)O(3) was added to blast furnace slag to promote the phase separation. The slag glasses were heat-treated above glass transition temperatures. The slag glass prepared from blast furnace slag gelled after the heat treatment and the subsequent three types of acid treatment. The ratios of SiO(2) component in the gels were 40 – 60mass%. On the other hand, phase separation was observed on the surface of the slag glasses prepared from pre-treated slag by 2.5N HCl after the heat treatment. After soaking in acid, they did not gel and changed to insoluble colorless solids. According to compositional analyses, it was found that the insoluble colorless solids contained 70 - 90mass% SiO(2). No colored ions such as Cr, Mn, and Fe were confirmed in the remaining insolubles by optical absorption measurement. Therefore, the colorless silica-rich solids were successfully obtained in the present process. In this study, the use of a polymer coated silica capillary and an anionic organic photometric reagent realized a stable baseline and short analytical time. Nine kinds of anions, Cl(-), Br(-), NO(3)(-), SO(4)(2-), C(2)O(4)(2-), ClO(4)(-), F(-), HPO(4)(2-), and HCO(3)(-), were well separated and detected within 12 minutes. Calibration graphs for the anions showed a good linearity in the range of 0 to 4x10(-4) mol dm(-3). Detection limits of the anions were 2x10(-6) mol dm(-3) (HPO(4)(2-)) to 4x10(-5) mol dm(-3) (NO(2)(-)). Anions in river water (Zasu river) and waste water (Okayama University, North district) were measured over 5 days. The waste water contained various kinds of anions, at high concentrations with its large variation, when compared with the river water. Such environment was our direct concern for risk of heat related disorders among students, guests and staffs using the facility. The building was old, and heat insulation seemed to be insufficient compared to recent standards for the building of the same kind. Introduction of a new air conditioning system to the facility was supposed to be avoided according to energy conservation policy. We considered that applying high-albedo paint to the roof would reflex the solar infrared irradiation and block the heat influx, thus lowering the ambient temperature inside the gymnasium. The renovation of the roof resulted in improved ambient temperature and WBGT. Taihu in China, and the possibility of water cleaning by plants floating culture system were examined. The eutriphication of lake water are strongly affected by both domestic and industrial wastewater because of the about 90% of wastewater without any treatments. Eutrophication has increased in most of the Chinese lake by high anthropogenic input of nutrients with the rapid progress human activity after the 1980s. For almost elements of water of L.Wuli were more polluted compared with those of L.Meiliang. The relation of nitrogen concentration of water was NH(3-)N > NO(3-)N> N0(2-)N in L. Wuli, and NO(3-)N > NH(3-)N > NO(2-)N in L.Meiliang, respectively. From the results of water quality analysis, the nutrient concentrations were increased, but not polluted by some heavy metals and slightly increased by surfactants, anionic surface active agents. Since then, a lot of pine trees have continued to die, and the damage area was spreading out even now. It is considered that one of the reason on the death of the pine trees might be "the acid rain" falling in the district. The rains and the underground water at Daikinya, Kuse-cho, Maniwa-gun, Okayama Pref. in the district were analyzed chemically by Funatsu in 1995-1997; the conductivity, the density of nitric ion (N0(3)(-)) and sulfuric ion (SO(4)(2-)), and the acidity (pH) in the rains were thus observed. In the present paper the results of the analysis on the rains have been reported. (1) The conductivity varied 4.2-197.0 μs/cm, and the average was 39.0. Most of particles are less than 30 μm in diameter, the greater part of particles observed at the 6 locations were considered to be transported from the Asian continent sources as Asian dust (KOSA). The variation patterns of the vertical profiles of particle concentrations in snow layers were corresponding among each location. A large scale village dating to this period was recently excavated at Ozato-higashi on Miyake Island. This site produced a large quantity of barley phytoliths from the artifact bearing strata. Although rice paddy fields cannot be utilized on the volcanic loam soils of Miyake Island, the presence of barley agriculture in dry fields was confirmed at Ozato-higashi. Compared with mainland sites of the same time period, Ozato-higashi produced many tools such as saddle querns and grinding stones that would appear to be linked with food processing. Another characteristic of the site is its almost total lack of fishing tools despite its coastal location. Ozato-higashi appears to have been a permanent residential village with a main emphasis on dry field farming. Furthermore, the presence of a large quantity of faunal remains at the nearby Middle Yayoi site of Kokomanokoshi suggests that rather than mere seasonal adaptations, a division of labour between villages was already in existence. On the main islands of Japan, this was the time in which full-scale agricultural villages based on wet rice cultivation were being established. The same was true of the Izu Islands, but here the evidence of sites such as Ozato-higashi shows that there was a flexibility to adapt to the more difficult local environmental conditions. The decomposition mechanism was based on thermophilic oxic process of microorganism. Effect of additional stuff on the stable operation of the apparatus was examined by use of 6 kinds of carrier stuffs. Wood chips as an additional stuff into sewage sludge made the apparatus possible to operate stably and continuously. Decomposition of sewage sludge was carried out efficiency when the weight ratio of sewage sludge to wood chips was less than 10%. The influence of rice bran on the decomposition rate has been studied. The temperature in reaction tank rose with the addition of the rice bran. The decomposition rate of sewage sludge increased with a rise in the temperature. It was clarified that the rice bran was added to the sewage sludge to accelerate the decomposition. It is clear from the measurement of carbon dioxide concentration in exhaust that the decomposition reaction reached in the maximum about 12 hours after the beginning of reaction. The CO, evolution rate increased with a rise in the temperature. Firstly, the school song “Wa-ka-ba” (which means the deep green leaves) was analyzed as a typical song expressing the season just between the spring and the Baiu, for developing study materials for the joint activity of meteorology to music. Next, seasonal difference of the rainfall characteristics around the Japan Islands was reviewed together with the new preliminary analyses, with attention to the contribution of the “heavy rainfall days” to the total precipitation amount. For example, although the air temperature around the Japan Islands is still rather higher from November to early December than in the midwinter, the wintertime weather pattern often appears then due to the development of the Siberian high. In the Hokuriku District, the Japan Sea side of the central Japan, the shallow convective rainfall called the “Shi-gu-re” frequently occurs associated with the air mass transformation process over the Japan Sea in the cold air outbreak situation from the continent. It is also well known that the “Shi-gu-re” is often used for expression of the “seasonal feeling” in the Japanese classical literature. Thus the present study tried to develop an interdisciplinary class on the climate environment around the Japan Islands in association with the “seasonal feeling”, with attention to the transition stage from autumn to winter. The present paper will discuss on the joint activity of meteorology with the Japanese classical literature, the music and the art, for the class at the Faculty of Education, Okayama University, and We present some experimental results concerning biodegradation of polyethylene. We introduce a mathematical model that govern the evolution of the weight distribution, and show how its inverse problem can be analyzed. We also introduce a mathematical model that governs the evolution of the weight distribution of polymeric compound subjected to enzymatic degradation, and present some numerical results concerning en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=In Japan, the Law for the Regulation of Nuclear Source Materials, Nuclear Fuel Materials and Reactors (Regulation Law) controls the nuclear fuel materials such as thorium (Th), uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu). Under the Regulation Law, all related materials and reactors are needed to register to the Government. In Okayama University, many nuclear fuel materials, mainly uranium compounds, are registered and stored in 11 departments, separately. Discrimination between depleted uranium and natural uranium is important for the observance of the Regulation Law and the safety management of the nuclear fuel materials in the Okayama University. However, the discrimination of the two kind of uranium has poorly analyzed. Recently developed new roof greening systems, such as the thin-layer/Excel soil© system and the wetland type greening system, were tested at the roof top of buildings of Research Institute for Bioresources, Okayama University. After a multi-year test, these new systems have been established during high-temperature and less-rainfall summer seasons in the south Okayama region. Data indicated that roof greening effectively reduced the temperature of the concrete surface (more than 10°C). The room temperature under the green roof was also reduced both in a stock room (up to 6°C) and in an office room (about 2°C). Although the fluctuation of monthly detected radiation dose throughout the year was rather low at each observation point, the mean value of dose equivalent was varied between the place of observation. From the observation of the distribution of environmental radiation dose in Okayama city, it was assumed that its distribution was well corresponded with the distribution of igneous rocks. The concentrations of radioisotopes in various kinds of rocks corrected in Okayama city and its vicinity were determined. It became apparent that high concentrations of radioisotopes, such as (134)Cs, (40)K, (226)Ra and (228)Th, were detected in igneous rocks, such as granite, gabbro and rhyolitic tuff, although the contents in sedimentary rocks, such as pelite, schist, psammite and limestone, were rather low.
