cannot monitor the change of in-situ contamination and concentration with respect to time. The purpose of this study is to develop a measuring system for subsurface contamination in which a so-called FDR (Frequency Domain Refiectometry) and FDR-V (with Vector network analyzer) system was employed to measure the salinity and oil contaminant. This FDR and FDR-V method is a coaxial probe method, which allows the measurement of the dielectric. The experimental study indicates the possibility in measuring both the contaminant concentration and volumetric moisture content. In addition, the method for obtaining the effective porosity using this equipment was shown. industrial waste was exposed at November in 1990. Industrial waste, including shredder-dust, slag, sludge, and the incinerated ash were carried into the Teshima island from 1978. The western part of this island in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan had been used as the illegal landfills for more than 10 years and the accumulated waste was estimated to be about 500,000 tons. The realities of heavy metal pollution for the soil, leachate, marine products, crab, and sea weeds were investigated at around the time of the cover soil treatment on the hazardous industrial waste of the landfill during 1991-1993. Afew reports of analytical results have been reported for chemical components of waste materials, plants, and marine products in Japan. The decomposition mechanism was based on thermophilic oxic process of microorganism. Effect of additional stuff on the stable operation of the apparatus was examined by use of 6 kinds of carrier stuffs. Wood chips as an additional stuff into sewage sludge made the apparatus possible to operate stably and continuously. Decomposition of sewage sludge was carried out efficiency when the weight ratio of sewage sludge to wood chips was less than 10%. The influence of rice bran on the decomposition rate has been studied. The temperature in reaction tank rose with the addition of the rice bran. The decomposition rate of sewage sludge increased with a rise in the temperature. It was clarified that the rice bran was added to the sewage sludge to accelerate the decomposition. It is clear from the measurement of carbon dioxide concentration in exhaust that the decomposition reaction reached in the maximum about 12 hours after the beginning of reaction. The CO, evolution rate increased with a rise in the temperature. The treatment of waste materials must not be limited only to the scale-up of the treatment plants. Considering the population density and nature of locality, construction of small-scale plant for intermediate treatment will be essential. Even after repeated reutilization and resourceconversion of waste material the generation of ultimate refuse can not be avoided. Accepting this fact, formulation of a strategy for a progressive society with "Less Emission" will be necessary. For this purpose, arrangements of treatment facilities for the ultimate refuse will be essential. Taihu in China, and the possibility of water cleaning by plants floating culture system were examined. The eutriphication of lake water are strongly affected by both domestic and industrial wastewater because of the about 90% of wastewater without any treatments. Eutrophication has increased in most of the Chinese lake by high anthropogenic input of nutrients with the rapid progress human activity after the 1980s. For almost elements of water of L.Wuli were more polluted compared with those of L.Meiliang. The relation of nitrogen concentration of water was NH(3-)N > NO(3-)N> N0(2-)N in L. Wuli, and NO(3-)N > NH(3-)N > NO(2-)N in L.Meiliang, respectively. From the results of water quality analysis, the nutrient concentrations were increased, but not polluted by some heavy metals and slightly increased by surfactants, anionic surface active agents. kn-title=Umu試験による生活系排水の遺伝毒性評価 en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=The umu-test, which can detect genotoxic activites of a wide variety of environmental carcinogens and mutagenes, was carried out with samples from several sewage treatment processes. We applied the umu-test to raw sewage and treated effluent from two points of view, one is to evaluate a treatment process and the other is to identify the genotoxic substances. The original strain of umu-test, Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 can detect nonspecific genotoxicity, on the other hand, by using S. typhimurium NM2009 of the umu-test highly sensitive to aromatic amines, genotoxicity related to aromatic amines is measured. The result showed that genotoxic substances which have the polycyclic aromatic amino structures in the sewage remained after biological treatment. Tow-step HPLC fractionation followed by MS analysis to identify the genotoxic substances was applied to samples to detect mutagenic and carcinogenic heterocyclic amines. The concentration of Trp-P-1 and Trp-P-2 determined in the effluent caluculated from HPLC-UV analysis were on the order of 10(-5) mg/L. Because of the possibility of the reuse of wastewater in urban areas, the need for the investigation of the safety of the treated water from the sewage treatment plants was suggested, in order to kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=Trace metals in water samples, such as tap water, river water, and sea water, were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). ICP-MS has sufficient sensitivity to detect even below the concentrations of ppt level, and therefore the samples were not pretreated with a concentration column. Practical samples were diluted by lo-fold with ultrapure water and measured directly by ICP-MS. The measuring time of one sample was 2.5 min, and the data for 30 elements were obtained simultaneously. The concentrations of heavy metals, such as Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb, in the water samples were in the ranges of 0.05~82ng/ml. Zasu river and Sibukawa (sea water) contained various kinds of metals, and the concentration ranges were spread in a wide range; for example, Mg was 25700 ppb and In was 2 ppt. ICP-MS is found to be a useful and a powerful instrument for trace amounts of elements, and can be applied satisfactorily to the environmental water analysis. en-copyright= kn-copyright= Chugoku District kn-title=中国山地に降る酸性雨の分析 en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=More than 30 years ago, the pine trees in the mountain-side of the Chugoku district in Japan, started to die. Since then, a lot of pine trees have continued to die, and the damage area was spreading out even now. It is considered that one of the reason on the death of the pine trees might be "the acid rain" falling in the district. The rains and the underground water at Daikinya, Kuse-cho, Maniwa-gun, Okayama Pref. in the district were analyzed chemically by Funatsu in 1995-1997; the conductivity, the density of nitric ion (N0(3)(-)) and sulfuric ion (SO(4)(2-)), and the acidity (pH) in the rains were thus observed. In the present paper the results of the analysis on the rains have been reported. (1) The conductivity varied 4.2-197.0 μs/cm, and the average was 39.0. (2) The density of nitric ion (NO(3)(-)) varied 1.6-84.2 ppm, and the average was 22.4. (3) The acidity (pH) varied 3.7-7.5, and the average was 4.9. In this time, we questioned hospitals in Okayama Prefecture about exposure equipments of abdomen. And we compared each hospital's exposure equipments with the basic data, calculated each patient dose, then we studied that differences. Various imaging system, for example; screen/film or imaging plate has been used at each hospitals, so that exposure are various and patient doses are very different. The exposure equipment decide that the X-ray photograph is good or bad, so we cannot treat it easily. For this purpose, the constituents of the system including the catalytic column were re-examined in detail. As the result, we developed a new system of the FIA which is available for the determination of ppb-order hydrogen peroxide. When hydrogen peroxide spiked in rain-waters(57-944ppb)was analyzed by the FIA, better recovery and reproducibility were attained compared to chemiluminescent analyses. The lower-limit of determination was 10 ppb hydrogen peroxide. kn-abstract=A role of the global-scale Asian Monsoon on the rainfall climatology around the Japan Islands (excluding that in Hokkaido) during warm season were discussed by reviewing the previous studies including the original results by the present author. Not only the mean monthly rainfall amount but also its year-to-year variation is large from June to September (or October) there. While the rainfall amount and its variation are especially large in the Baiu season in Kyushu, they relatively large in autumn rainfall season (so-called the "Akisame" or "Shurin" in Japan) . It is noted that the huge northward moisture transport from the moisture-rich subtropical high area to the Baiu frontal zone is largely affected by the low pressure area in the subtropical region around South Asia. On the other hand, the low pressure area associated with the stagnation of typhoons around the Southwest Islands area (to the southwest of the Japan Islands) seems to play an important role in the huge moisture transport toward the japan Islands in the autumn rainfall season. A comment on seasonal persistency of the rainfall anomaly from spring to summer and summer to autumn is also presented by examining the monthly rainfall data in Nagoya, the central part of the Japan kn-abstract=セレン及びその化合物が有害物質の一項目として水質汚濁防止法施行令の一部が改正され,排水基準が設定されているが,セレンの排水処理技術に関する知見は少なく,大学内で発生するような複雑組成廃液中のセレン化合物の処理技術に関する報告はない。セレン化合物(セレン酸塩)の処理技術方法の一つに第一鉄塩あるいは水酸化第一鉄との化学的還元法がある。第一鉄塩は排水処理の中では一般的な還元剤である。中和凝集沈殿法,フェライト法はともに硫酸第一鉄による還元であり,鉄粉法は特殊鉄粉が溶解して第一鉄イオンとなり還元剤となる。大学内で発生する複雑組成無機廃液中にセレン酸塩が含まれる場合の第一鉄イオンによる化学的還元法を試みた。セレン酸塩の還元除去は,添加する第一鉄イオン量に依存性があること。同量の第一鉄イオン添加量であれば,酸性下及びアルカリ性下ともその還元除去率に有意差のないこと。特殊鉄粉は複雑組成無機廃液の廃液組成に影響され易いが,還元除去率を高くできる可能性がわかった。また,セレン酸塩が亜セレン酸塩となる還元反応が反応律速であり,亜セレン酸塩は直ちに反応系から除去されると考えられる。しかし,これら第一鉄イオンによるセレン酸塩の化学的還元除去に可能性はあるものの,10mgSe/lのセレン酸塩を排水基準以下(0.1mgSe/l)にすることはできなかった。 Wasted water and water pollution aggravate this water shortage. Since water resource distribution is imbalanced in northeastern China, many plans to allocate and transfer water have been advanced. However, the water is realloted only inareas with shortages of water resources. Therefore it cannot be believed to be alongterm strategy. There are great potentials for water utilization in northeastern China, if the plans adjusted to the agricultural structure, and can overcome the problems of wasted water and the water pollution. In a word, the water shortage problem in northeastern China should not be underestimated, but so far, over quite long period, no natural limit has been reached. A large scale village dating to this period was recently excavated at Ozato-higashi on Miyake Island. This site produced a large quantity of barley phytoliths from the artifact bearing strata. Although rice paddy fields cannot be utilized on the volcanic loam soils of Miyake Island, the presence of barley agriculture in dry fields was confirmed at Ozato-higashi. Compared with mainland sites of the same time period, Ozato-higashi produced many tools such as saddle querns and grinding stones that would appear to be linked with food processing. Another characteristic of the site is its almost total lack of fishing tools despite its coastal location. Ozato-higashi appears to have been a permanent residential village with a main emphasis on dry field farming. Furthermore, the presence of a large quantity of faunal remains at the nearby Middle Yayoi site of Kokomanokoshi suggests that rather than mere seasonal adaptations, a division of labour between villages was already in existence. On the main islands of Japan, this was the time in which full-scale agricultural villages based on wet rice cultivation were being established. The same was true of the Izu Islands, but here the evidence of sites such as Ozato-higashi shows that there was a flexibility to adapt to the more difficult local environmental conditions. The formation of a society having such an adaptive flexibility meant the end of the society which had carried out incipient cultivation from the latter half of the Jomon period. en-copyright= The total 1941 litters were collected and analyzed. Of these, ones of 1562(80.5%) were burnable litters, ones of 379(19.5%) were unburnable metal/tiles and plastic goods. In burnable litters, the first place was the tobacco and relevant goods of 58.8%. The second place was the paper chip/propaganda bill/printed matter of 17.4%. The third place was the candybag/paperbag of 9.9%. The fourth place was the chewing gum/its envelope of 6.3%. The fifth place was the sanitary/medical supplies of 4.9%. The sixth place was the paper cup/paper package of 2.6%. The rest was of 1.0%. In unburnable litters, the first place was the empty can/bottle of 45.6%. The second place was the package of 36.6%. The third place was the accessory on a candy of 7.4%. The fourth place was the iron/aluminum goods/tile of 5.5%. The fifth place was the stationery goods/sport goods of 3.4%. The rest was of 2.6%. We could arouse student's interest in not only road litters but also in environmental issues. In this study, the use of a polymer coated silica capillary and an anionic organic photometric reagent realized a stable baseline and short analytical time. Nine kinds of anions, Cl(-), Br(-), NO(3)(-), SO(4)(2-), C(2)O(4)(2-), ClO(4)(-), F(-), HPO(4)(2-), and HCO(3)(-), were well separated and detected within 12 minutes. Calibration graphs for the anions showed a good linearity in the range of 0 to 4x10(-4) mol dm(-3). Detection limits of the anions were 2x10(-6) mol dm(-3) (HPO(4)(2-)) to 4x10(-5) mol dm(-3) (NO(2)(-)). Anions in river water (Zasu river) and waste water (Okayama University, North district) were measured over 5 days. The waste water contained various kinds of anions, at high concentrations with its large variation, when compared with the river water. Many studies have been published about patient dose, but those data were classified by each organ or tissue. Actuarially, patient dose should be checked by each examined part of patient and each exposure equipment. In this paper, we measured absorbed dose at the depth of 0-200mm with the Mix-DP phantom. The phantom is made by tissue equivalent meterial and is designed to similitude abdominal part. Percentage Depth Dose (PDD) was calculated from these doses. Three single-phase generators and three three-phases generators were used in this measurement. These measurements were analyzed by each equipment, and consequently the clear difference of PDD between the exposure equipments was not found. As the result, we can estimate patient dose at a random depth by using PDD. Furthermore, we can easily know patient dose from the tube-voltage and current time product by the calculation including PDD.These data are very useful to manager patient dose on radiological kn-abstract=Monitoring of environmental ionizing radiation and radioisotopes in Okayama city and the vicinity was carried out from the point of view of the external radiation from the environmental radiation dose. Although the fluctuation of monthly detected radiation dose throughout the year was rather low at each observation point, the mean value of dose equivalent was varied between the place of observation. From the observation of the distribution of environmental radiation dose in Okayama city, it was assumed that its distribution was well corresponded with the distribution of igneous rocks. The concentrations of radioisotopes in various kinds of rocks corrected in Okayama city and its vicinity were determined. It became apparent that high concentrations of radioisotopes, such as (134)Cs, (40)K, (226)Ra and (228)Th, were detected in igneous rocks, such as granite, gabbro and rhyolitic tuff, although the contents in sedimentary rocks, such as pelite, schist, psammite and limestone, were rather low. The adsorption model to discuss kinetics was proposed. Over-all coefficient of mass tansfer was measured and its correlated equation was obtained. The simulation of concentration variation by the model was cbincident with experimental data. The multi-stage classification model was proposed to apply the adsorption model to particles with wide range of size. Fluidized bed treatment for actual wastewater was discussed. Concentration variation in the treatment was able to be simulated by the model that over-all coefficient of mass transfer obtained from experiments of actual wastewater was used. en-copyright= However, the radical theraputics against the pollenosis has not been established yet. Some deactivating methods, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, wet heat treatment and adsorption method to the extracted solution of ceder pollen were examined. Deactivating effect against the pollenosis antigen was determined by measuring the changes of the specific antibody values (IgE antibody) in patient blood serum as the marker in vitro.
