It analyses the differences and commonalities in terms of their education, family structure, and ethnicity. It also examines how some Japanese-schooled Koreans (re)gained their ethnic identity through their activities in the Chongryun youth group, as well as why they were attracted to the group and how their activities affected their lives and identities. The author conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with thirty-seven Zainichi Koreans, including eighteen Japanese-schooled Zainichi Koreans, from 2007 and 2010. This research shows differences in schools and education are the major source of divisions in the Zainichi population and the subsequent formations of their identities. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=WickstrumYuuka en-aut-sei=Wickstrum en-aut-mei=Yuuka kn-aut-name= kn-aut-sei= kn-aut-mei= aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil= en-keyword=Zainichi Koreans kn-keyword=Zainichi Koreans en-keyword=education kn-keyword=education en-keyword=Japanese schools kn-keyword=Japanese schools en-keyword=Ryugakudo kn-keyword=Ryugakudo en-keyword=identity kn-keyword=identity en-keyword=ethnicity kn-keyword=ethnicity END start-ver=1.4 cd-journal=joma no-vol=11 cd-vols= no-issue= article-no= start-page=113 end-page=126 dt-received= dt-revised= dt-accepted= dt-pub-year=2015 dt-pub=20151230 dt-online= en-article= kn-article= en-subject= kn-subject= en-title= kn-title=Korean Migration and Japanese Colonialism en-subtitle= kn-subtitle= en-abstract= kn-abstract=This paper outlines the historical background to Korean migration and Japanese colonialism in order to understand the birth and formation of the Korean population in Japan (Zainichi Koreans). Through this exploration, this paper shows how Japan attempted to assimilate the Koreans into the bottom of Japanese society and to destroy their ethnic identity as Koreans. It also examines how the racial discourse of the Japanese ‘superior race’ had been developed and played an integral part in justifying its socio-economic and subjugation of East Asian people including Koreans during the colonial period. en-copyright= kn-copyright= en-aut-name=WickstrumYuuka en-aut-sei=Wickstrum en-aut-mei=Yuuka kn-aut-name=ウィックストラム由有夏 kn-aut-sei=ウィックストラム kn-aut-mei=由有夏 aut-affil-num=1 ORCID= affil-num=1 en-affil= kn-affil=岡山大学言語教育センター en-keyword=Zainichi Koreans kn-keyword=Zainichi Koreans en-keyword=Korean migration kn-keyword=Korean migration en-keyword=Japanese colonialism kn-keyword=Japanese colonialism en-keyword=ethnicity kn-keyword=ethnicity END
